Accreditation and Peer Visits
The Commission of Public Secondary Schools of the New England Association of Schools and Colleges (Bedford, Massachusetts) (CPSS/NEASC)
More than 700 schools, 95% of New England's secondary schools, are members of CPSS/NEASC and accredited by this the century-old regional accreditation association for New England. NEASC is one of the six regional accrediting associations for American schools.
In 1996 the Commission engaged Catalpa, to conduct a multi-year study of how it went about its work. A central question was the rigor of the accreditation visit, which was the signature event of American accreditation.
The study was supported by the LAB at Brown. The study led to a set of conclusions and recommendations for CPSS/NEASC that played an unusually important part in the significant revisions that CPSS/NEASC implemented.
In addition, this study of an American school visit yielded important information about how a school visit works that contributed to the development of Practice-Based Inquiry®.
